Curated by Nancy Campbell, this exhibition will feature recent works by first generation Cape Dorset artist Papiara Tukiki, whose unique drawings capture a world of fantasy, animals and traditional life.

“The work of Papiara Tukiki is, like that of many senior artists in Cape Dorset, having a renaissance. The re-invigorated pencil work, the larger scale paper and the fresh graphic approach is combined with traditional recollections of the land, myths, and animals.”

Luc Courchesne took part in the emergence of media arts thirty years ago when, as a video artist inspired by a generation of experimental filmmakers such as Michael Snow and Hollis Frampton, he adopted computer technologies. First delving into interactive portraiture, a great artistic tradition re-articulated in a new mould, his work has recently turned to another important genre, that of landscape. With his installations, “panoscopic” images, and a device of his own making used to create a sense of visual immersion, he transforms spectators into a visitors, actors and inhabitants of his experiential crafts. Born 1952 in Québec, Courchesne received a Bachelor’s degree from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Halifax (1974), and a Master of Science in Visual Studies from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge (1984). He began his explorations in interactive video in 1984 when he co-authored Elastic Movies, one of the earliest experiments in the field, and since produced about 30 installation works and image series including Encyclopedia Chiaroscuro (1987), Portrait One (1990), Family Portrait (1993), Hall of Shadows (1996), Landscape One (1997),Passages (1998), Rendez-vous… (1999), Panoscopic Journal (1999-), Panoscope 360° (2000-), The Visitor: Living by Numbers (2001), Untitled (2004),Where are you? (2005), Horizons (2007), the Shores Series (2008-) and Icons (2009) in a co-creation with artist and choreographer Marie Chouinard.

His work is part of major collections in North America, Europe and Asia and has been shown extensively in galleries and museums worldwide including: the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Art Gallery of New South Wales (Sydney), Tokyo’s InterCommunication Center (ICC), La Villette (Paris), ZKM/Medienmuseum (Karlsruhe), the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the National Gallery of Canada, the Fundacion La Caixa (Barcelona) and Beijing’s National Art Museum of China. Based in Montreal, Luc Courchesne is professor of design at Université de Montréal, founding member of the Society for Art and Technology [SAT], board member of the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.

Framed Immersions

Feheley Fine Arts is pleased to present a new exhibition of drawings by Cape Dorset artist Shuvinai Ashoona at Centre Space. The World is a recurring theme in recent work by Shuvinai Ashoona. Her drawings often depict multiple images of planet earth. This exhibition presents her exploration of time and space, local and global issues through this series of drawings.

There will be a Gallery Talk on September 22, 3pm as part of the Gallery Hop Toronto, organized by the Canadian Art Foundation. Curator Nancy Campbell will be in discussion with artist John Noestheden who completed a major collaborative project with Shuvinai Ashoona in 2008 that became the inspiration for this series of drawings.

—————————————————

Shuvinai Ashoona was born in Cape Dorset, Nunavut in 1961. Her artistic heritage is considerable; she is the granddaughter of renowned graphic artist Pitseolak Ashoona and the daughter of sculptor Kiawak Ashoona. This is her second solo exhibition at Feheley Fine Arts and her first in Centre Space. An illustrated catalogue will be available.

Her work has been featured in group exhibitions across Canada as well as in the United States and Europe. Exhibitions in public institutions include Shuvinai Ashoona and Shary Boyle at the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery, Hart House, University of Toronto; Oh Canada, Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, North Adams; Inuit Modern, Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto and Sanaugavut: Inuit Art from the Canadian Arctic, National Museum, New Delhi.

Carleton University Art Gallery has recently published a monograph on Shuvinai Ashoona which serves as the catalogue for their 2009 solo exhibition of her work. Her drawings are included in the collections of the Art Gallery of Ontario, National Gallery of Canada, McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Toronto Dominion Bank Group and numerous private collections.

Earth and Sky, the collaboration with artist John Noestheden which sparked this new series of drawings was commissioned for a city block-long installation inBasel, Switzerland in 2008. Shown in banner form during the 2008 Nuit Blanche and at the 2012 Sydney Biennale, it will again be exhibited in Spring 2013, mounted over the impressive entrance path to the National Gallery of Canada. The original collaborative drawing is in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada.

SHUVINAI’S WORLD(S)’

Excerpts from the Catalogue essay by Bruce Hunter

From her earliest works, the art of Shuvinai Ashoona has been informed by the influences of community, history and personal experience, and the spiritual connections made through memory, story and fantasy. Over time, the emerging field against which these influences played out has been the rock strewn shore of Cape Dorset, which for millennia has edged and interacted with its own parallel and elemental marine universe.

Incorporated onto pristine and extended white surfaces, favourite images such as tents have been connected by ink line and organized into precisely rendered coastal pebble and rock landscapes. Shuvinai’s elemental tent image has now transitioned from a simple sheltered protection that is connected to the landscape through an architectural organization of physical supports, to a world – a world that even utilizes botanical and imagination-conceived tendrils to link to her other world(s) for compositional strength.

In Shuvinai’s compositions however, her world(s) never collide – they touch, they eclipse, and sometimes they simply and elegantly float in perfect harmony with each other, but always in sensitivity to nature. Shuvinai’s tendrils surround her world(s) in such a way that the eye is led around the image by these connections.

Shuvinai has an intuitive sense of compositional elements, and they always rest securely in nature. Her world(s) are a floating and colour-infused metaphor for the centre of family life that is positioned on an axis in space and held in place through a galactic network of anchors and supports extending from within the larger community.

One world has now become many for Shuvinai, and each represents the twin expanding universes of her external and internal creative explorations. The once flattened and extended white field against which the original, precisely organized ink line renderings were grouped and distributed, has now been replaced by a sky; a sky that is spatially but carefully worked in colour and balance and extended out to the image edge, much like the horizon of heaven.

A new collaborative gallery space opens February 24, 2012

North, South, East, West: All directions point to 65 George St., Toronto this Thursday February 23rd: All in one spot, the art of the Canadian North comes South to Toronto in Dorset Now at Feheley Fine Arts (of Toronto), while the art of French sculptor Rodin is reflected through a contemporary lens in Adad Hannah’s Unwrapping Rodin, presented by Pierre-François Ouellette art contemporain (of Montreal). And Toronto meets Montreal as Pat Feheley and Pierre-François Ouellette join forces to launch a new mash up of contemporary art at Centre Space.

Feheley and Ouellette are proud to announce the inauguration of Centre Space, a new concept for a contemporary art gallery opening to the public Friday February 24th. After many successful years in Yorkville, Feheley Fine Arts recently moved to a new venue: 65 George Street in downtown Toronto (east of Jarvis Street and south of King Street East).

Centre Space is a shared commercial “white cube” exhibition space located within the new Feheley gallery. Feheley Fine Arts and Pierre-François Ouellette art contemporain will each program four to five independent exhibitions per year of their respective artists – providing access to a broad spectrum of contemporary practices by Northern artists, artists from Quebec and elsewhere. Centre Space provides an exceptional opportunity to see works by artists who are ground-breaking in their fields.

“Pierre-François has a history of pushing the boundaries in his exhibitions by featuring museum-quality works of art in both large and small formats, and in a range of media,” says Feheley. “This fits with my stance of challenging the traditional view of Inuit art by championing contemporary Inuit artists working in new scale, new media, and new subject matter.”

For his first exhibition at Centre Space, Ouellette has selected Adad Hannah’s large-scale photographic suite, Unwrapping Rodin which was first presented in the Fall of 2010 at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal. This exhibition coincides with the presentation of two videos from the Traces series by Adad Hannah at the Art Gallery of Ontario’s installation, “Watch This Space: Contemporary Art from the AGO collection.”

Feheley Fine Arts’ lofty new space shows to full effect the impact of contemporary Inuit art. Feheley has selected for the inaugural exhibition, Dorset Now, a group show of top contemporary Inuit drawings in varying scale by artists including Shuvinai Ashoona, Itee Pootoogook, Tim Pitsiulak, Jutai Toonoo, and Ohotaq Mikkigak.
